Prime Minister Orders Rigid Control at Cambodia-Vietnam Border

Phnom Penh: Prime Minister Hun Sen has ordered stricter controls at the Cambodia-Vietnam border, after receiving reports that Vietnamese nationals continue to cross despite the border being closed to them. The Prime Minister fears that imported cases coming from Vietnam will add to Cambodia’s already high number of daily Covid-19 cases.

Speaking during Friday’s meeting of the Council of Ministers, the Prime Minister said the border situation must be taken seriously, with Vietnam itself also suffering from another wave of Covid-19 infections.

On Friday, southern Vietnam’s biggest city, Ho Chi Minh, began a 15-day lockdown. Cases are also climbing elsewhere in the Mekong Delta, as well as in other provinces that border Cambodia. The Prime Minister says no foreign nationals are allowed to cross into Cambodia from Vietnam until further notice.
